Silver Star Mountain - October 10, 2009 : Dave and I did an afternoon hike of Silver Star Mountain via the Grouse Vista trail. The route is 6.6 miles rt with 2400' elevation gain. Silver Star is 4390'. The mountain (my new favorite training hike) was in its full autumn glory; boasting brilliant colors of red, orange and gold against the deep greens of the firs and shrubs. A stellar day. Best line of the day was from Dave: "I wish I had a jeep right now". :)

South Sister - September 14, 2009 : Met Cindy and Russ Thaw (from Lake Tahoe) for the first time in Bend, OR for dinner last Sunday evening. Hiked South Sister, via the Climbers Trail, on Monday. Twelve miles rt with approximately 5000' elevation gain. Highlights (aside from summiting) were crossing the snowfield of the crater through the veil of clouds simulating walking into nothingness. The cool, thin clouds moving swiftly across the ridge on descent. Oh yeah... and getting over 10K. Great day!

Eliot Glacier Tour - July 19, 2008 : I had wanted to climb Mt. Hood in June or July as my spring climb was canceled (private group). I couldn't get on a climb but did get lucky enough to join the Mazama's Eliot Glacier tour (there was a last minute cancellation). The EG is on the north side of Hood; the less traveled side and considered more scenic. The views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens were stunning. Gary Beck led the group with David Pyszkowski assisting. We were three groups of three climbers each. Really fun group. We practiced crevasse rescue (I've been so focused on cardio, core and legs; time to focus more on upper body strength)! Had a phenomenal day ending with the traditional celebratory meal (Mexican food this time).

I had been deliberating climbing Hood from the easier south side or the more difficult Sunshine route (north side). I will be being ready for the Sunshine route next spring as I so much prefer the path less traveled.

Keep training, keep climbing and keep inspiring!

Snow Camping - Mt. Hood - February 8, 2009 : I was invited to snow camp on Mt. Hood with two very experienced climbers last weekend. Both have summited Denali and had invaluable skills to impart on me. It was a fun weekend and I heard some great "mountaineering" stories. We enjoyed sunshine, warm temps and no wind! The kicker was when Rob Lee wanted to go down to Timberline lodge for a nice dinner on Saturday night! We really "roughed" it ...... ;)

South Sister - July 26, 2008 : How do you describe a perfect day? Well, a few depictions might be: spending time with nice and adventurous people. Sunshine and an occasional breeze. Spectacular scenery. Viewing numerous jagged mountains and lakes in shades varying from glacier blue to jade green. Challenging yourself. And climbing to the top of a mountain. That was my day on Saturday. I was lucky enough to join a Mazama climb of the South Sister led by Lori Freeman; Daniel Van Rossen assisting. The weather could not have been better. Our group meshed very well and conversations flowed. South Sister is one of the more beautiful mountains that I have climbed. It is located in eastern Oregon, just south of the North and Middle Sisters and is part of the Cascade range. Elevation is 10,363 feet. We climbed 12 miles r.t. with approximately 5000 feet of elevation gain. Start time was 5:20 am, summited at 11:45 am and returned at 5:20 pm. We took many breaks as we had a group of 12 plus a couple shawdows (don't ask). I feel so fortunate to have stepped foot on this most majestic mountain. Of course, we ended with the celebratory dinner. The group chose Cascade Lakes Brewpub; great food. All in all, not a bad day!!!

Mt. St. Helens - Oct. 27, 2007 : We were a group of seven; really great mix of hikers. We started at Climbers Bivouac and hiked Monitor Ridge up the south slope. It was a PERFECT day! Sunshine, no wind and I was wearing a t-shirt at the top! The snow was hard pack in the morning and did get a bit soft by afternoon. Overall, great conditions. No snowshoes or crampons were needed. The hike was a bit more challenging than I had thought it would be; a lot of rock scrambling in sections making the hike back down hard on the knees. In fact, I strained my left knee immediately after leaving the top so I slowed down my pace as to not make the injury worse. The view looking into the crater is awesome. There was some steam coming from the lava dome which has grown tremendously in recent years. What a spectacular site! We were back down the mountain by about 4:30 in time for a great dinner just a short distance from the trailhead...good times had by all.

Mt. Whitney - June 9th/10th 2007 : I hiked Mt. Whitney with MooseTracks and had the most amazing time. I drove down from Vancouver, WA on Thurs./Fri. (long drive)! I took an acclimatization hike to Lone Pine Lake (on the Main Mt. Whitney Trail) Fri. afternoon where I met Richard Piotrowski on the trail. Started my hike on Sat. morning with perfect weather. Left Whitney Portal (trail head) at 10:00 am and arrived at Trail Camp (12,000 ft.) at 5:00 pm. Set up camp and we got lucky...no wind! The next morning (Sun.) I left TC at 7:15 am and arrived on the summit at noon (14,505 ft.). I was feeling surprising well and stayed on the summit for an hour. Miguel Forgan leaped up onto the summit from the East Buttress route and chatted with me about my upcoming Kili climb. It was so rewarding and the views were tremendous (the word grandiose kept coming to mind). Again, perfect weather all day Sunday. I had the best time and met some great people who I have only known through the Whitney Portal Store Message Board (great web-site for any info on Mt. Whitney).

Mt. Whitney - June 9th/10th 2007

Mt. Baldy - April 5, 2008 : A perfect day on Baldy (Mt. Baldy is 10, 064'). Crystal blue sky with low lying clouds below us all day. There was an occasional light wind on the summit. The highlight was the company; 12 of us in all with nine making the summit. The majority of us took the Ski Hut trail; 8.4 miles round trip with 3900' elevation gain. The route is strenuous and very scenic. The snow conditions were good although there were a few icy spots where the snow was quite hard. We carried crampons and ice-axes but most of us did not use them (came close). A few members of the group went directly up the bowl and crampons/ice-axes were necessary. They met back up with us and we were on the summit together. We left Manker Flats (trail head) at 7:25 am and arrived back down by 3:00 pm. A well deserved early dinner was enjoyed by all at the local bar/lodge. An absolutely phenomenal day!

Camp Muir - May 12, 2007 : I climbed to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier yesterday as a training hike for Kili. It was a phenomenal day! The weather was perfect up to C-Muir. The clouds rolled in quickly by afternoon but I was able to get back down to Paradise and then drive to Ashford in time for a great dinner! All in all, a perfect day with some great fellow climbers.

Dog Mountain - April 12, 2008 : Dave and I took a late afternoon hike up Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge (remember the one perfect day we had here in the NW this spring)? It is considered a strenuous hike; short but steep (7.1 miles r.t. with 2850 ft. of elevation gain). Gorgeous scenery hosting views of the Columbia River, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams (to view Adams, you have to hike through the trees at the top and look north). By next month the balsamroot will be in full bloom (looks like small sunflowers). As you approach the top of Dog Mountain when the balsamroot are in bloom, all you see is yellow as far as the eye can see!

Dog Mountain - April 12, 2008

Dog Mountain - June 7, 2008 West Coast Mountain Group : Christina (from WEST COAST MOUNTAIN group), Dave and I hiked Dog Mountain in the Columbia Gorge (WA side) Sat., June 7th. Dog Mtn is 7.4 miles r.t. with 2850 ft. of elevation gain. Christina brought her dog, Casey, the perfect hiking dog! It was overcast (no rain) which kept us nice and cool. Dave had to turn around after several miles due to his bad knee. As we came out of the trees, the wind picked up. The balsamroot were in bloom and we saw numerous wildflowers. This hike was a milestone for Christina and she did awesome!!! As we left the top and began our descent, light and fast moving clouds came up the mountain. The wind really picked up and it was quite breathtaking. Walking down the ridge was amazing! I had some pain in my left knee (previous injury) but made it down just fine. Great day!!!
